Re: GUI for MV app on PDA / Mobile devices

Sholom,

world. Is there Cache for mobile devices?

FYI, Cache has been around for as long as MV. So, to say that MV is
old technology and Cache is new is silly. Yes, they have put many
features into their product, but, so have companies like QM. There
are also many third party companies that supply techinologies that MV
manufactures don't (like DesignBais ** shameless plug **).

I am not bashing Cache. I actually like their offering very much and
attend their User Conferences every year. I simply had to respond to
this one statement.

I've read your blog and find your ideas very intriguing.

As you know, I've been doing PDA stuff for a few years now, so, as you
can imagine, I've done things a bit differently, as all applications
require different approaches. Most notably, I use Web services to
communicate between the PDA and the host. I find it works quite well.

I highly recommend "The Definitive Guide to the .NET Compact Framework"
by Larry Roof and Dan Fergus (APress). It's chock full of good advise
about GUIs, Data Binding, XML, Error Handling, etc. I find myself
constantly referring back to it.

Also, while your research project is to specifically work with QM on the
PDA, I'm not sure I would go that way on the PDA in real life. MV is old
technology, and the world has moved forward, so while I use (and like)
MV on the server end (and can understand why someone would want to have
a single technology mindset for all parts of their project), I might
want to go with something that fits in better with the object-oriented
world. Is there Cache for mobile devices?

I dunno how many of you subscribe to the QM (Commercial) forum or my

Within the last couple weeks I got the itch to create a GUI client for
mobile devices.  This time I just wanted to make the technology work,
just for the fun of it, and leave the practical applications to you
folks who deal with real end-users every day.  Why did I do it and why
am I posting here?  As usual, just to stir up the soup a little and
see where it takes us.

As documented in the blog there are various aspects to the concepts of
GUI, MV, and a PDA.

1) Some people love the idea of MV being on the PDA itself.  Others
don't see the value.  I'm not taking sides, just making stuff work.
2) Some people insist that all mobile devices should be networked but
that's not always practical, so I loaded QM on my PDA and worked on
the assumption that there was no network and that the data and code is
all on the local device.
3) Some people are comfortable with browsers being the client
application, and some people think a tiny web page _is_ a mobile app.
But for many reasons a browser can be inadequate, or simply the wrong
choice of client for certain apps.  Again, no sides here, I'm just
doing a POC for a focused audience.
4) Some people feel MV on PDA is all they need and a character
interface for that is just fine.  Personally I feel that's like
putting an 800x600 monitor and 14k modem on your 3GHz server, and I
thought many people would like the idea of a GUI (this being the 21st
century and all...).

So anyway, I documented the experience on my blog, even went into some
detail about how it was implemented, and I'm tempted to post code at
some point if I can find time to properly prepare it.

Comments are welcome here or in the blog - and if any of you have
end-users who want a GUI for their PDA, with or without onboard MV,
with or without network access... just let me know.

Thanks for your time.
