way to attach a trigger to that?

Having thought a little about this, and not knowing how your version
control software works...
You could have a shadow file inside D3 and use a trigger on the D3
file to do your validation and then finally write the acceptable
version out to the OS.

Thanks .. we already had that all installed. But working against the
"working copies" is much better as anytime you dup data you have a
problem.
