I have recently been briefed on a fairly new product/technology,
Sonicwall's CDP (Continuous Data Protection). The concept employs
tapeless backup/recovery, on-site and off-site. CDP claims to
backup open files, which would be a consideration for D3/NT, using FSI
type of files. Has anyone in this forum implemented this product, or
any like it? Just curious as to experiences, good and/or bad.

Jim,

I have no experience with this product, though similar products we
have checked over the years all ended up in "tragedy" (especially when
dealing with the VME). Whilst there are "inbuilt" solutions for D3 on
*nix platforms, we also found these lacking because of fragility
(break a network connection & watch what happens) and degree of manual
monitoring & intervention required to keep the systems up & in-sync.

You might want to check out our Visage.DRS product, which allows you
to replicate your database to one or more backup/standby servers to
provide a disaster recovery capability. There are some "nice"
capabilities, like being able to do a "clean" backups off a backup
server (overcomes the ever decreasing backup window - backup could
take >24 hours for all we care), and also being able to build a
"clean" in-sync backup server from a "dirty" backup performed on your
running primary server

Visage.DRS is available for ALL D3 platforms, overcoming the
shortcomings of the inbuilt (though additionally licenced) product on
*nix platforms (self healing, can withstand multiple failures &
maintains multiple logs) and the total lack of a product on D3/NT
(works with FSI & VME).

More info onhttp://www.stamina.com.au/Visage/visageDRS.htm We are
also now also offering Visage.DRS as a fully outsourced service (no
need for you to purchase standby servers, D3 licences etc), to either
augment or replace your own dedicated onsite capabilities
