I remember when Robert Nagle went over this with us. Essentially the
Caché backup is done in (at least?) two passes. The first is a full
save on the live system of whatever can be saved given the current
locking status, open transactions, etc. There is no need to pause the
system or bump users as with other MV environments. The next passes
get whatever it couldn't get the first time plus any new data. The
result is a combination of a full-save plus incremental saves, which
when restored as a single operation gives a complete restore as of the
time of the final pass. I believe they've designed this to ensure
proper transaction-level integrity in the final save.
