Hope hope someone might be able to help with this urgent problem

I thought that I would set out the symptoms fairly rationally.

1. Tower machine linked to Linux box via LAN cable

(a) wIntegrate gets messages:

"Connecting to 198.162.1.1"
"Connection refused"

(b) Accuterm gets messages:

"Connecting to host"
"Network connection refused"

(c) Telnet can log in to Linux machine OK from Windows command prompt

(d) The same message occurs when running wIntegrate or Accuterm whether
or
not the network cable is plugged in.

2. Laptop is connected to Linux via wireless network

No problem

3. Wireless network disabled. Network cable plugged in to Laptop.

No problem.

I have no real knowledge of networking, but the conclusions I would
reach
are:

1. The fault does NOT lie with Linux as I can get in on the laptop

2. As I can telnet into the Linux box, it looks as though there is some
element of Windows XP/PRO that is used by two high-level application
programs, but not by the low-level Telnet, that has gone missing.

I had a virus the other day and perhaps what is missing was infected
and
then cleaned out by AVG.

The problem then resolves into:

What has gone missing?

Where would it/they normally reside, as I could get them back from a
good
backup disk?

Or do I need to reinstall something from the Windows CD?

Thanks for your help

Best wishes

.. Panic over!!

Somehow ZoneAlarm had got screwed up after I upgraded the other day. It
wouldn't load. I managed to find the latest version on the web site and
downloaded it again. After some fiddling with the task manager, got it to
re-install and all seems OK now.

Best wishes
