Re: Online Demos

Simon,

I remember toying with fake server demos offered by a web-CRM company. You
could "play" with real stuff, live. It's similar to how Doug sets up vritual
machines for clients, except the company's server created a virtual Linux
host on-the-fly at registration time. When you decided which toy you wanted
to test, all you did was select it and fill out a test-drive account. The
test drive was a fully functional virtual host with it's own pre-filled DB,
web service, etc to support the application. When you logged out, your
virtual host was deleted and your ID no longer worked. However, this was for
a _web_ application, not a windows app. If your application is green screen,
then I don't see why Doug couldn't help you set something up similar to this
for your jBase app. I assume that you will be limited to the number of
pseudo machines you bring up at a time.

Larry

I don't know whether EasyCo support jBase though I suspect they do.

The problem I have isn't the hosting of the database (I have a dedicated
hosted server running jBASE that is available for the task).

It's more providing controlled and secure access to the client application
over the web. I could for example just give out the client application
on a CD and configure to access the server over the web but that may
provide "installation" related support issues - I'm still considering this
as an option but I'm not entirely happy with it.

I like the terminal services concept and will be looking more into this.
Products like gotomypc, logmein etc are also an option... I may just put
a second PC on the net with just the client application installed
pre-configured to run against the server....

Regards
Simon

Greetings,

I wonder that no one suggested going to EASYCO and renting
time on one of their server boxes?

Or do they not support jBase ??

This is seriously off topic, but I'm sure lots of people have advice for
me.

I want to set up a PC which will have our application installed and want
to allow full control over the internet for the purpose of prospects
using to "test-drive" our application....

I need something that has the following features:

- Easily accessible using a web broswer only.
- Secure - the machine will either sit on our network or on the internet
somewhere - I want the user to be presented with a single icon that they
can click to run the application but allow nothing more..
- Log of who is using the demo site.
- Only allowing one person in at a time (the test-drives will be
scheduled).
-
I don't know if I can achieve all of the above..

Any suggestions / recommendations? The application is a windows client
application that runs against a jBASE database (to keep it relevant to
this group!!).

Thanks in advance

Simon
