Aye, matey, there's another rub.
Because I never know what's going to happen some time into the future
(that, I am assured, comes from being "male" <g>), I always make
specific files for all these "reference" files, as opposed to new
items in an overall "reference" file, just in case we *might* need to
store/retrieve statistical data on the referenced items......
The "description" applicable to the reference code used is Field or
Attribute<1> and we can then, if necessary, whenever necessary, add
additional fields for related statistical data.....or we're left with
a "reference file" that has a few items with descritions.... 6 of one,
half a dozen of t'other...
Standard maintenance programs apply to these files...
Case in point: We had an instance where we were required to apply a
classification against Sales Credits (Credit Notes), eg, "Operator
Error", "Customer Error", "Pick and Pack Error", "Broken in Transit",
etc... Over time, at that particular site, it's grown from a simple
"classification" to a "Qty and $ value per month" per classification
to a "customer by classification - Qty and $" and a "product by
classification - Qty and $" to a "product by customer classification -
Qty and $", to a "supplier by product classification - Qty and $" if
it's a supplier-based problem, to a "picker/packer by classification -
Qty and $" if it's a picking/packing problem, and I think there are
even "rep by classification", "rep by product", and "rep by customer"
and "rep by product by customer" files to cover that now... ......
and on ...and on... it goes..... Disk must be cheap these days....
All useful information for CRM (Customer Relations Management) and SCM
(Supply Chain Management) I'm told....
I suppose the IMPORTANT bit is it's a case of, in more instances than
not, "If we're going to classify it, then we'll need to have
statistics against it", ergo, separate files.
