Hi Barbara

Looking through my files, I found thishttp://hem.bredband.net/bertilisberg/paradox/beyond/bid31.htm

It's on how long filenames, other than 8.3, are encoded by different
versions of Windows. I'm not usre it's relevant to your problem.

Which is the exact error you'll get when opening a file? And could you show
the exact name of such a file?

There have been reports on problems if the pathname has contained other
characters than letters and digits.

And BTW, exactly which version of the BDE, eg IDAPI32.DLL, are you using? I
hope it's a version later than the one that shipped with Paradox 8.

Writing this, I now recall problems using Paradox 7 caused by files on a
network drive having been restored from a backup. The backup software didn't
restore the shortname of long filenames in the same way as they had been
created initially.

My client is running Pdox 8 on Windows XP machines. Until recently
(about 2 months ago) the system was running fine - with the usual
corrupt tables every now and then, but basically okay. In the last
couple of months there have been all sorts of problems, which seem to
be server related. So.. they decided to move the system onto a brand
new server.

We have everything pointing where it should. Within Pdox we cannot
open any file with a name that is more than 8 characters long. The
path is a one letter drive name which maps directly to the server
(which is named "Mail-1"). So our longest file names + path have no
more than 20 characters.

We compared the new and old server settings and permissions and they
are identical.

What am I missing?

I'd appreciate any help!

Thanks,

Hi Bertil,

Thanks for your answer. Unfortunately I STILL can't get into my
client's computers. I can answer some of your questions now, and will
answer the others when I get access to the computer where we switched
working directories.

The exact error message (from memory - so it may not really be exact)
was "Invalid file name". The table that was being opened was
schedfreeze.db. (Actually :ATKT:schedfreeze,db where :ATKT: is an
alias for M:\Maestro, and M: is the "mail-2" server.)

I passed on the information about the file names to their server tech
guy, but I'll keep looking too.

Barb
