You're correct.
IBM was very self confident until the day Gate's took them to the cleaner
with the idea of "Leasing" MS-DOS and the "IBM PC-Clone" became a viable
alternative to the over priced IBM PC.
Again, competition cleaned up that (I'm your only choice) attitude and IBM
is a better company today because of it. IBM realized that it did have to
compete or it would fade away. That meant that IBM would have to adopt old
tried and true themes such as, "Quality", "Innovation", "Price" and
"Service". They have and they are a better company today because of it...
not to mention that their customers and the entire industry have also
benefited greatly by it.
Linux is the savior for the OS industry... Even for those who want to stay
with the flock and get their annual fleecing.
