Re: Reports 6i replacement options.

We're starting to look at replacements for Reports 6i before the
extended support expires. As I understand it, Reports 10g needs
either Oracle Forms & Reports Services or Application Server
Enterprise Edition, both of which are licensed as ASEE, meaning
significant additional cost; especially as we don't want or need
any other AS functionality.

Can anyone recommend an alternative, either web-based or
client/server, that runs on Windows & won't break the bank?
Something that can make a reasonable attempt at converting 6i
reports would be ideal, but not mandatory. Ideally it needs to be
easily distributable & installable as we have an ever-increasing
number of sites, most of which have zero IT expertise on site.

I recall something about Forms/Reports and installation on 10g OC4J
(that would be the minimal install of the App Server)

I vaguely remember that too, but as all the options for Reports 10g on
Oracle's website specify ASEE licensing, presumably any 'workarounds'
would be unsupported at best, & illegal at worst.

- better contact
your Oracle Rep, and make sure to ask specific questions, and point
out the consequence: no sale! :)

Good plan - I'll suggest that to the powers that be.

For new developments: why don't you look at Application Express?
Current version does graphics and PDF at no extra cost - can use the
Apache by Oracle as delivered with the database - same licence, no
extra cost.

I had a look at that a few weeks ago, & nearly gave up after three days
of grief trying to install it. I should've realised things wouldn't go
well when the first step failed miserably. "Application Express is on
the 10g Companion CD." Err... no it isn't - not the x64 version anyway.
I did eventually get it working using the 32-bit version, but it was a
LOT of hassle.

Having said that, it did seem pretty good once working. Unfortunately
the person who makes the decisions in our organisation is 100%
Java-centric, so I doubt APEX will be 'officially' assessed anytime
soon.
