Thanks for the advice. That's my preference too, on the principal ground that each application has its own backup requirements and can control its own backup schedule. The catalog is just a dumb slave and records the information it is given.

However, if you don't mind, could you explain _your_ reasons? There may well be other considerations of which I am not aware.

I realise of course that either way the RMAN process will run locally, but to aid my understanding, what are the advantages of starting the RMAN client locally rather than from the box where the catalog is?
