Thanks for taking the time to explain this so comprehensively.

I think Oracle needs a book or greater inclusion of this topic into
their courses. It seems many technologies (RAC, Streams etc.) rely on
knowledge of how global_names, service_names, database links and the
like are interelated.

Hopefully your post will answer many peoples questions on this too.
