Oracle 10g Install Issues (make failing)

I am attempting to install Oracle 10.2.0.1.0 on a Solaris 2.9 box that
has Oracle 8.1.7.4.0 already installed. Each time the install gets to
a certain point it fails. At first we thought it was the use of
symbolic links but the installer is looking for certain *.a files that
are empty, so it fails. Even if all the errors are ignored, a relink
all at the end still fails. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
We have installed Oracle 10g more than 50 times on different servers
and never seen this error before.
