Your story makes no sense to me; a symlink is OK, but it links to your home directory!
So? I have a home/oracle/admin/<SID>/pfile directory, and the init file
lives there.
$ORACLE_HOME/dbs has a symlink to the file.
Might not be to everyone's taste, but it's worked fine in this
environment for years...
