I want to try to use the SQL upsizing wizard in Access2007 so I
downloaded and installed SQL server express (with .NET framework etc).
SQL took a very long time to install and my computer now is very slow.
I'm sure I've got sufficient resources because Office 2007 ran fine
before installing SQL server. Has anyone had any experience with this
and could give me a tip on how to get my computer's performance back?

Chances are you need more RAM in your computer.  SQL Server can suck up to 200 Mb of
RAM at rest.   Run Task Manager (taskmgr or Ctrl+Alt+Del) and take a look.
Fortunately RAM is fairly cheap these days.

Thanks Tony,
I had 5 megs of ram and just upgraded to 1 gig to see if it helped.

Presumably you meant 512 Mb of RAM. I'm finding that even 1 Gb of RAM these days is
on the low side. And that's just for friends who are regular PC users and not dev
types.

What are the numbers when you review Task Mgr? What is your OS BTW so I can tell you
what numbers to look at?

I think it's all gone but something is still slowing my machine down.
The mouse movement is jerky and programs such as firefox take forever
to load.
Obviously some settings were changed and are now causing problems.
Any suggestions would be welcome.
Along with installing SQL, IIS (internet information services) was
installed (or enabled)
Is this an essential windows component?

IIS is not an essential windows component and can also suck up RAM. I don't even
know why SQL Server would install it.

Also check your event log. Maybe your hard drive is dying.
