Re: Each user MUST have his own FE?

I have ran FE mde's from the Server (which also contained the BE) and
it was notably slower than running the FE when it is installed in
computer using it. For this case, the server was located in Atlanta
and the users were located in California. Switching to a local Server
(i.e. located in the building) improved performance from running the
FE from the server, but it was still faster if the FE is installed in
a local computer.
I feel that the reason for this is the transfer rate of data. You have
to transfer data from the FE to the BE. But in my case I also have to
transfer data from the our clients Warehouse Management System to the
BE. So the data transferred is handled by the FE and Pulls data From
the WMS to the FE then from the FE to the BE, or the FE to the user.
With this scenario, there is a lot of data traveling between the user
and the FE which is considerably faster if it is in the same computer.

The poster's statement "A local FE will run faster because everything it
needs - except the data - is a coupla hard disk calls away."...that is
what I disagreed with. I don't knock the stability aspect you stated,
but his statement I do. Maybe he has some proof and he should provide
it. Blanket statements without foundation don't cut it.- Hide quoted text -
You're absolutely correct - I haven't methodically tested that
assumption and have to conceed the point that it's based on a
combination of experience, thought experiments, and, quite frankly,
folklore.
It would be a good experiment for someone to do.
This has been a very interesting discussion and I've learned at lot -
thanks, all.
I'm interested in the collective experience of splint v single
database when the user count jumps above about 8 - that's where I see
the most speed benefits after splitting.
thanks again,
