Hi Guys,
Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate the input and the effort. I will
start with Tony's question:
The reason for this is basically to 'push out' a monthly data set
combined with the needed analytical functions in a completely self
contained format. Unfortunately I cannot go the FE/BE approach due to
constraints on the IT environment - basically time constraints based
around changes to the FE functionality would have to go through a
'process' that takes longer than the cycle of an individual report,
and I am not allowed to just distribute the FE myself.
This leaves really only two options as I can see it: One is to use an
MDE and the Access runtime (which is a standard component of the
corporate desktop / laptop environment), and the other is to build a
flash based interactive report. The result would be roughly the same
except that I dont have much experience with flash and I do with
Access - so Access it was.
The reason for the 'It must produce and MDE' is due to the user(s) who
will build the reports themselves. They dont know didly and in theory
should'nt have to in this scenario. They run the builder, the builder
compiles and validates the data as per requirements, and outputs a
'Report MDE'. They can then distribute the MDE by whatever means the
wish. It needs to be an MDE so others cant easily 'play' with it. Its
not perfect, but it will get the job done, and from the users and
corporate perspective it is 'clean'.
Lyle, thankyou for that snippet, I will give it go and see what comes
of it. I simply hadn't though of even doing that. The touch of the
masters hand.........
Robert, I hope the answer to Tony's question answers yours too.
Basically a single stand-alone 'executable' file to be the goal. Its
not ideal, but it fits the restrictions and environment.
Thanks guys for the help. Have any of you tried or made something like
this before?
Cheers
