That was the model I was originally using for my remote apps, but my system
(security) guys told me several years ago that I had to move away from that
for security concerns. For those apps I had to switch to sending
HTTPRequests to a web service instead of connecting directly to the SQL Box.

They would show me reports of the hundreds of malicious attempts per hour
that were hitting the SQL Server when it was exposed to the internet. AFAIK
none of them ever got in, but they were nervous about leaving it set up that
way.
