Hi,
I don't know when the --as-needed flag was introduced, but I guess it's
not in the version of ld you're using.
On 2 boxes I've got, the flag's supported in ld 2.15.94.0.2.2 (FC4),
but not in ld 2.14.90.0.4 (RHEL3).
