We currently have an old version of SE, 7.1 (date on the files is
1995, is there a way to pull the actual version number, the release
directory files don't seem to have it). We are running applications
on 4gl RDS 6.03.UC1. I seem to have been successful in beating the
holders of the purse strings to agree the risk is too great in running
it even if we run it only to migrate. And we can update the system
cheaper without migrating to a new db.
So I would like to get some advise from people other than IBM sales.
Is the process of moving from SE to IDS ugly? It looks like IBM is
building a new version of IDS, how about SE, or is that dead yet? Do
I want to update the I4GL or is there a better choice, like Aubit (I
haven't had any luck getting it built and running on windows, I was
going to try the linux build), FourJs, Querix?
We would like to migrate our 4GL to a GUI or Web environment. What are
some of the better options there?
There is 4GL 7.31 out now and SE 7.25. That migration path is probably the
simplest, and although there is no more development going on for SE (and
probably 4GL as well), it is/they are still supported.
If you're feeling adventurous, you could migrate to 4js or Querix on the
front end or IDS on the back end, neither SHOULD cause any problems, but
it's a hell of a risk to take at once.
