You can get the kind of code you are referring to over at Google. They have developer resources for just the kind of queries you are referring to, and show you how to place addresses on the Google Earth map.

Well thats part of the problem.

Software developers who don't grok the database end up writing inefficient queries and code.
This concept of the database just being a persistent data store should get the developer demoted to junior grade to the assistant of the assistant of the piss collector.

Now if you want to suggest something fun...

How about a geo-spatial query that finds all of the homes for sale with the minimum number of registered sex-offenders within a 2 mile radius of the home? (And then add in factors like square footage, #bedrooms, #baths, price ...)

(This query came up during a conversation with some former neighbors of ours. They recently moved from the city (Chicago) to the burbs. She was telling my wife that she was shocked to find out just how many registered offenders lived close to our condo.)

Want some more fun, try and think of some epidemiology research queries, like looking for cancer clusters or antibiotic resistant TB.

If you want to be politically incorrect, try to find a home that is within proximity with the most number of gentlemen's clubs and/or nightclubs or bars. ;-)


At least is much more interesting than trying to talk about how you've optimized a query that used to use roll up tables in an effort to gather data for your monthly sales forecast... :-(

But hey! What do I know?
