No disrespect Neil, but using your logic they would have to dump all the docs,
release notes, training manuals, etc.
Some amount of guidance is expected, and there _is_ a software agreement in
effect when you install the software. It's understood that you have to tune
it, and if anything, there are not enough solid guidelines to this day to
elevate tuning above the black art it is today.

1) Query the system to determine the amount of memory and the # of CPUs
2) Ask the user the approximate size of the database (small, medium or large) giving a rough range
of each.
3) Ask the user the number of simultaneous connections one can expect.
4) Ask the user if this is an OLTP, DW or both environment.
5) Aks the user how many CPUs he wants to use. (Assuming multiple core/cpu system.)
[Ignore if only 1 cpu found]
6) How much disk space he wants to allocate to the system.
Create a base config from this input.
While it won't be perfect, it will be enough to get a "better" tuned system out of the box.

My thought was to offer a quick list of suggestions that were customized to the box being installed on instead of having a predefined list of configurations that may not even be practical for the machine being installed on. I was not suggesting an optimizer but a quick way to get up an running with an engine that would make use of the machine it was installed on.

Perhaps, but wouldn't that open a Pandora's box? I mean what constitutes "reasonable" ?

Wouldn't it be nice if the installer was smart enough to sniff out the machine info and suggest a reasonable list of configurations to choosestarted right out of the box.

All should have a minimal BLOB / SmartBLOB space, say 1 GB each.
(These are all discussion points, but I think their should be a numbersemi-tuned options. ;o)I'd have agree with OTC on these. I've got a beater Pentium III right now
using 1CPU, 512MB RAM, 100GB of IDE drive space available, easy to chop up. His
designation of sandbox would equal what I would call "tiny" compared to
current stuff on the market. I've also got x86_64 AMD boxes too, running
Linux and SATA drives.
The other thing that starts to get
rather sticky is, what are
you refering to as a CPU when you start talking about DualCore
and hyperthreading, both give the appearance of being 2 CPUs
per physical CPU. Guess this is a little out of scope but
interesting to consider for processor affinity, etc.
