They must have been deleted by someone / something. Do you have any
scripts that perhaps archive old files, or something similar ?
And if I'm not mistaken, .sh_history doesn't work for all your shells,
someone could have logged in under a different shell.

Dear all,
Something really strange just occurred on my system.
My system
HP-rx7620: Itanium 2 server
OS-HP-ux 11.2v
DB-Informix 9.4x
Storage-EVA3000
For some strange reason my oninit and onmode file just disappeared from
my informix directory. I check user .sh_history file and there wasn't
any records of the 2 files being rm by anyone...
I am not sure if anyone has had this problem before, or can provide any
suggestions on where to look to trouble shoot..
Any help would be great.
