Re: FM10 SMTP... follow-up question

not true... e.g. pop.mindspring.com is used for both receive and send.

I had spotty results as well. trying various email accounts:

pop.x.y refuses to send

smtp.x.y appears to send but never shows up...

smtpauth.x.y is ok

Is there an error handler in the SMTP stuff?

A provider can call their servers anything they like, but pop.x.y is
usually
the incoming email server, so obviously you won't be able to send via
that.
The smtp.x.y is the one for sending email. Some providers use other names
like mail.x.y.

Many Internet providers will also not let you send email via their mail
servers unless you are logged in via an account with them, so if for
xample
you are trying to send emails using your home Internet provider's servers
from a work connection, it may not work. Authentication may solve this
with
some email providers.

I don't know how FileMaker 10 handles all the settings (or even if it
handles them all), but as long as you copy everything from a working email
application, incuding port numbers, etc., then it should work in FileMaker
too ... but is is a brand new feature and may still have some bugs that
need
fixing.
