I just learned a technique today at DevCon from Andy LeCates via Todd
Geist that is pretty clever. You can use the Web Viewer to display a
variable. You've got to drop the variable in the Web Viewer with the
appropriate HTML (which I bet you can write a custom function to take
care of) and the variable will display.

Curious. Why would that work only with Web Viewer?

The Web Viewer is the only layout object, besides fields, that
accesses the calc engine and can display values (conditional
formatting accesses the calc engine, but without displaying values).

Aha! That addresses my original question and explains a number of
other things too. Thank you.
