Hello all-
I'm experiencing a strange recurring problem. I am serving a 250MB
FMS9 database (running on Windows 2003 Small Business) to 6 FMP9
clients. Every five days, the database will crash ("Database is
damaged and has been closed") at 11:00AM - 11:05AM. It will do this
for two consecutive days. Then for five days it will be fine. The
database always reopens.

Server logs show that this is happening during the scheduled half-hour
backups. But it is only happening during the 11AM backup, and only two
days out of the week. I've tried compacting the file, but that didn't
change anything. I've also made sure there isn't any anti-virus
software accessing the database files.
Any thoughts?
Nate

Are you using third-party software for scheduled backup[s]? Or are
you doing scheduled backup[s] from within FileMaker Server? Or
possibly both?

The fact that the db always reopens suggests to me that you're having
an issue with locked files, i.e. files in use by another process. If
you're using third-party software for backup, or even if you're just
using Scheduled Tasks and xcopy, make sure it's not trying to backup
at simultaneously with FileMaker. Also, make sure you're not trying
to do several different backups to the same path. Spread your backups
around. Each scheduled backup really should have its own path.

What I like to do is, I let FM Server do scheduled backups. Then I
use a third-party backup utility to backup the backups by copying them
to various places on the network. This eliminates the possibility of
trying to backup a file that's locked. And it's all scheduled and
completely automated.

Last thing I would suggest is, try doing a restore from one of your
backups. No backup protocol can be considered reliable if it hasn't
been tested by restoring the backed-up data.

hope this helps
