I agree that sliding a *single field* makes no sense: what I'm talking
about is three or more fields stacked above each other, and wanting to
eliminate space in, say the second field if it is blank, thus:

Field 1
Field 2 <- this field is empty
Field 3

becomes

Field 1
Field 3

By choosing middle-alignment you're telling FileMaker you want the text
in the middle of the space the field is taking up, so sliding the field
closed, and thus sliding up other fields below it, still makes no sense
and is inconsistent. You have to decide whether you want the text in
the middle or sliding up.



I had originally set the fields' vert-align to middle for aesthetic
reasons: when inputting data in a field with a border and a background
fill, a few pixels' space around looks and feels better.

It's more usual to have one Layout for data entry and another for
printed reports ... but of course if you copy/paste fields from one
Layout to another (or have set the default to middle-aligned) you will
find this "problem".

You could draw a rectangle around the field instead to get the same
indented effect.
