Need help with new website design

I am in the throes of my great table-to-CSS conversion and have reached my
first stumbling block, on which I would be grateful for help. You can see
how far I have gone at

http://www.altman.com/sample.htm

I like the idea of a "current" indicator -- which you can see along my main
nav panel in the orange background -- and I have continued that to my
sublinks that travel down the left side. My dilemma is that this technique
completely puts asunder any opportunity to globalize these elements.
Normally, I would place my main nav panel in my template and create library
or SSI elements for my sublinks. I can't do that if I need to single out one
link in a group and assign it the Current status.

How do others get around this? Is there a kernel of JS code that might
address this? My links are fluid enough that I know that I really have to
control them globally; I can't be keeping them unconstrained across my
entire site, just to be able to light up a link.

I would appreciate some perspective on this...
