Enforce password at startup not working

FMP 8.0v3 Adv on Mac OS 10.4: I set automatic login as guest and use the
Alt key to get the password window. Works with all my files.
Now a guy sends me a file he's been working with FMP 8.5v1 on a Mac. It
has the same setting, but the Alt key has no effect. Tried different
keys and combinations, nothing works. Finally moved the file to a
Winblows XP machine and used the shift key and remove the automatic
login.
Back on the Mac, I get full access now. However, again no chance to get
the password window as soon as I put the automatic login in. Still no
problem with my files. The creepy part is that the file in question was
created by me on my very Mac. The guy with the FMP 8.5 just used it and
added a table.
One more of Filemaker's way telling us we better move to Windows?
