We run Filemaker 4.1.1 on Windows XP Pro w/SP2 on a Windows 2000 Server
network. The database resides on the server. We experience good performance
opening the database over the network using our older Windows XP systems but
we just installed 2 new HP DC 5700 computers with one GB of RAM each and
dual core Pentium 1.8 GHz processors. We did a normal install of the clients
and tried mapping to the dattabase using a drive letter first
(Y:\Servername\Database folder name), then tried the URL mapping
(\\servername\Database Folder name) to the database. Both paths are
unbelievably slow - almost 3 times slower than the older computers. We have
uninstalled anti virus, disabled the firewalls and increased the FileMaker
cache to 4096KB. How can we get File Maker to perform at least as well as it
does on the older computers? Any help is appreciated.
Do *NOT* access filemaker databases over a network hosted via a
Windows file share. It is unsupported, unreliable, and unpredictable.
If its worked fine so far, great, but don't tempt fate. You will
corrupt the files sooner or later.
If you want to share share filemaker files over a network, use either
the peer sharing features of Filemaker Pro, or the dedicated file
sharing features of filemaker server.
