FileMaker Pro ODBC

I have not used FileMaker since 98. I am just trying to help a friend
who need to connect to a FM Pro 7 DB through ODBC on Mac OS X. Can
anyone with experience in recent versions of FM confirm (or correct)
what my few hours of search/trial&errors seem to show that to connect
to FM through ODBC you need a "server" or Advanced version of FileMaker
6,7 or 8.x.

Also, according to this :
http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/mac/2004/02/17/filemaker.html ; in
the section labeled ODBC Issues on Mac OS X, it looks like we should
not spent more time than necessary attempting this connection; we
should migrate from FM to MySQL or something.
