You are correct in that I'm not using Filemaker Server on the file server.
Only the database files are there so we can access them from the two
computers on the Lan.
Once I save a backup of the db files on C, I presume that both A and B
(separately or together) will be able to use them on C?

If you're only using 2 computers to access the FileMaker 3 database
then its probably not hosted by FileMaker Server.
Assuming your workstation computers are A and B and your file server
computer is C the setup should be;
- put ALL ".fp3" database files on computer A
- delete all ".fp3" files from server computer C
- do NOT share the directory that contains the ".fp3" files on computer
A (meaning computer B can NOT see the files)
- launch FileMaker on computer A and click on Edit -> Preferences ->
Network - and make sure TCP/IP is selected, restart FileMaker if
required then open the ".fp3" files
- set all ".fp3" files to multi-user
- launch FileMaker on computer B and click on Edit -> Preferences ->
Network - and make sure TCP/IP is selected, restart FileMaker if
required then click File -> Open -> HOST - you should see the name of
the ".fp3" files that are hosted by computer A, click on one of the
files and open it as a guest of computer A
- at the end of the day quit FileMaker on computer B then quit
FileMaker on computer A and save a backup of the ".fp3" files to the
server computer C but give the backup files a different name so that
there is no chance of FileMaker accidentally opening the wrong copy of
the files.
