Bill, your solution has nothing to do with search and replace, or Excel but neither did option number 4 in my list, which was to import into a single record and then use position to populate other fields, as you suggested. I admit I did suggest getting rid of the carriage returns first, primarily because using the "¶" character occasionally causes hysterics for Windows users.
I certainly acknowledged that you made his life easier by actually providing the necessary base calculation, but it was still the same method, and the method absolutely requires that all headings in all records have identical spelling. None of my suggestions required scripts, and I don't think the original poster actually meant scripts, but rather calculations, though that is simply a guess on my part. My self-exposed flaw was my over-reaction to you using the words "considerably easier" in reference to the method, when I included the same method as you, but not the detailed instructions on how to do it.

Uh, Kent,.
How does my recommendation have anything to do with search and replace or macros in Word or Excel? It doesn't. You just specify to import a folder of text files and you're done. (If for some reason the files are in .doc format instead of .txt, Word includes a batch conversion command.)
And, does not having an actual calculation you can just drop into your FileMaker file, one that requires just a simple edit for each header, (1) not a "variation" but an actual solution and (2) also make it much easier?
The original poster was thinking of writing scripts and contemplating having the data re-entered by hand as an alternative. He wrote, "I suspect that the undertaking is too complex, given the variations in the information from entry to entry...."
I think the task is relatively easy to be honest. The calculation I posted will always work to extract the information following a heading that starts at the beginning of a line, whatever the format of information that follows it.
Sorry, I can't say that creating an XML document and schema, or the other elaborate and time-consuming processes you suggested were particularly appealing -- even if one were a VBA expert. I stick by my use of "considerably" if that's what you are complaining about.

Again, it will depend on how consistent the original heading entry was. Even with the other methods, how difficult they are is entirely dependent on how facile you are with search-and-replace, and macros in Word and Excel.

Scanning the text, it appears that each line of the entry follows the format
