The server configuration is essentially the same - In my mind when you
say "app" above, it is synonymous with "database".

FM Server 8 Hosts the database, if it is not "open" on the FMS 8, it
is not available to be seen.

Each of the client computers,
however, has only the runtime app (not FoxBase), which looks to the G5 for
the data. In other words, for the clients, no runtime app = no access to the
data. So with FileMaker, this configuration wouldn't be possible, I'd have
to install full versions of FileMaker on each client?

Correct. Instead of a runtime app on the client side, you have a full
version of FM Pro 8 on the client computer. Although FMP 8 is cheaper
than FMP 8 Adv, you might still have to watch the clien's budget when
allotting for the copies for each client computer.

And since they have a copy of the database program, you need to set
access permissions and passwords up so they can or can not make
changes to your database design - not a big deal, just something to
not forget.

A FileMaker database can of course be set-up to be accessed across a
network via any old web browser software. Depending on the complexity
of the database system and what users need to be able to do, it may or
may not be another option.
