| Agreed, many of the papers they post will have patents filed. But
| academic papers will often have patents filed as well, and my beef is
| that as taxpayers we paid for those, we paid for their publication,
| and in most cases, we probably paid for the patents to be filed, and
| we still have to pay again to read the papers!
|
| And, just because a patent is filed does not mean it will be granted.
| And just because it is granted doesn't mean you don't want to read the
| paper. And the paper may still be valid after the patent expires.
|
| Just as an example apropos of this NG, try finding a legal free copy
| of the LZ77 and LZ78 papers, written and published by University
| researchers.

Amen. Progress comes from the free sharing of conceptual ideas,
Patenting the practical applications is supposed to be the money making part
of the deal. If it weren't for the slippery Congress of Newt Gingrich
wanting the Copyright Office to be "Self-Supporting + Profitable", then we'd
never have to endure such obvious idiocy like the "One-Click Shopping"
Copyrights and Copyrighting conceptual methods over functionally-proven
methods.
This nonsense won't end until the damage of Newt Gingrich's shady
backdoor deals against the Copyright Offices & Patent Offices are undone.
