I need to archive WAV music files. Can you recommend a loss-less
coder/decoder? Thank you.

Flac works pretty OK.

Are you sure you need lossless? PCM isn't lossless in the
first place.

Well, I thought I should use a lossless codec, lossless from
the point of WAV PCM. Do you have other recommendations?

Other than lossless? How about lossy?

What are your requirements? What will be using the compressed
files? If it's the human ear, then why ignore decades of
research into psychoacoustics?

Many of the modern advancements in codecs have been for low-
bitrate applications, and are noticably poorer than the original.
Some of the higher bitrate codecs are still fairly passable.
I have no problem with high-bitrate MP2s and high-bitrate VBR
MP3s. (Using the lame codec.) Allegedly OGG Vorbis is superior
to either of those, but I've never given them a side-by-side
listening test.

Oh yeah I just love those offset correction handles and the awesome
bit-masking. It doesn't matter when you're wearing headphones tho. Or
if you're generally a hearing-impaired dude like me who can tolerate
56 kbps hip-hop.

But if you wanna compress PCM, you should first convert to 8-bit (no
point in 16-bit precision, not a huge diff) and cut off stereo if it
doesn't make a significant difference, you may or may not wanna tune
it down to 22KHz instead of 44 and finally: compress with a good
codec, WinRAR will do. On the other hand, you may wanna keep it 16-bit
cuz it sometimes compresses better + you get to keep the quality. Now
your song (or whatever the content your .WAV holds) will be about the
size of an MP3 with noticibly reduced quality. Of course MP3 also has
noticible reduced quality if you're an autistic ***-goblin who can
hear the whistles of a caterpillar in a noisy penguin cavern but cant
find his own ass in a snowstorm. Point? None. I still don't see any
trees.
