Is Gailly still maintaining it?

No. Are you volunteering?

If I am asking about LZ77-family parsing algorithm *omissions*, would
it not be obvious that I am not qualified to maintain it? ;-)

What do you think of the idea of moving the FAQ to Wikipedia?

I don't know if anyone has attempted to do this with other FAQs, but
this has some significant advantages over old-school FAQ management.

Just as an example, if Jean-loup moves on in life and stops maintaining
the FAQ, it's a simple enough matter for others to pick it up without
any formal process.

Which is precisely why it's a bad idea, IMHO. I trust JLG to maintain
it - I trust MM to maintain it. I'd trust you to maintain it, but I
sure as heck wouldn't trust "anyone who cares to register". Prevention
of abuse is far better than the ability to simply cure it /post facto/.
