Is Gailly still maintaining it?

No. Are you volunteering?

If I am asking about LZ77-family parsing algorithm *omissions*, would
it not be obvious that I am not qualified to maintain it? ;-)

What do you think of the idea of moving the FAQ to Wikipedia?

I don't know if anyone has attempted to do this with other FAQs, but
this has some significant advantages over old-school FAQ management.

Just as an example, if Jean-loup moves on in life and stops maintaining
the FAQ, it's a simple enough matter for others to pick it up without
any formal process.

And if I understand Wikipedia properly, everyone who cares can register
for notification of changes, so it's easy enough to maintain the
integrity of the FAQ.

If the Wikipedia will allow the creation of an entry called
"comp.compression FAQ" I would be happy to start it.
