video modeling

hello,

I am new to codec technology and like to have an overview on video modelling techniques. My task is to simulate a UMTS link and find statistical behaviour of video transmission over it.

What do you think is a good modeling approach for that purpose? I read in a few papers about tracefile-base approach. What other options do I have?

I am sure there are certainly people in this group who can refer me to some documentation.
