the paq style compressors are available under gpl.

does "GPL" mean one can use a software as one wishes ?
does it mean is absolutely freeware ?

depends on one's definitions.

with gpl'ed code, you can do almost everything except:
remove credit or disclaimers from files;
transfer over to other liscenses;
refuse to make source code available;
....

note that if a project contains gpl'ed code, one has to put the whole
project under the gpl afaik.


many commercial people view all this as being too restrictive, as they like
to claim the credit and keep their source hidden away from people...

under gpl, one is free to use, distribute, modify, ... the code, just they
are restricted as in the above.


my code is free (as in public domain), I don't ask much or really require
anything. just if I can be given some credit, that would be nice (my name
was in the top comments).

the code for it was written by me, but the concepts it is based on are not
strictly original.
