In my experience, slapping idiots rarely makes someone smarter. Only
quieter. You may feel that you've improved the world but all you've
done is made the idiot someone else's problem.
If it was that easy to unlearn idiocy, there wouldn't be so many of
them.
As someone who has received thank-you mails from someone after
slapping them several times on a mailing list, I can't entirely
agree.
And even if they only become quieter on a broadcast medium like
usenet rather than actually learning, I think that's a worthwhile
improvement /per se/.
If every fora to which I was a newb had someone as blunt as TSD,
I'm sure that I'd pick up many things a lot faster, not being a
masochist.
