lzrw1a compression algorithm in vb.net

I can live with some help. I am porting (for exploration only !)the
ancient algorithm of Dr. Ross Williams. Since currently i remember only
VB.NET that is the language which will be used.
IS VB good enough for the bit shifting required to set up the
control
field for a group?
