Program Error on Compiler Tab

I installed the free base system (lccwin32.exe, manual.exe, and
win32hlp.exe -- yes, the latter help file is still installed) on my Windows
2000 SP4 laptop, and it appears to run well except for the following
feature:

On the Project/Configuration menu item, clicking the Compiler tab always
causes Windows to produce a "Program Error" box that says, "wedit.exe has
generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart
the program. An error log is being created." (I don't know how to find the
"error log" that is referred to by in this message, but let me know what
other information you need.)

I encounter this situation, for example, when I create, make, and test a new
console project, using the default settings (including a check mark in the
"Generate debug info" box), and then want to go back and recompile WITHOUT
the debug-info setting to create the final code.

By the way, I assume that the "Generate debug info" setting causes the
resulting executable to be named "project-name.err.exe", but I cannot find
this documented, nor the source of the "project-name.err" file that is also
created. Is the latter produced by the compiler, by errors during
execution, or both? (This information is probably documented, but with no
index or search function available for the User's Manual -- see my previous
query of September 19, 2007 2:43 PM -- it's difficult to locate.)
