What bothers me is that if Intel is going to be the only BIG chip

So, encourage AMD. I am fortunate in having management backing to do
this, but since they have a significant market share, it behoves anyone
who's serious about software to test and benchmark on their hardware,
advertise them as a supported platform, and generally treat them
seriously. This does not extend to the mindless fanboyism that seems to
have given some bits of AMD a view that they're invincible, and they can
decide what happens. But encouraging their competition is to everyone's
benefit in the long run - even Intel's.
If AMD had not built a good 32-bit core and started to compete
effectively with the Athlon, or had then not extended it effectively to
64-bit, we would all now be stuck with Itaniums. I spent a couple of
years getting software running on Itanium, and it wasn't an experience
I'd recommend. We shipped on Windows and HP-UX, but nobody used the
Windows version, and there was only one customer for HP-UX. This didn't
remotely cover the costs of porting, never mind production.
