IBM was not the *only* offender in that regard.
While everybody used the standard symbols in electronic schematics for
diodes, resistors, vacuum tubes and transistors, because the JEDEC
symbols for logic gates came along rather late to the party, just
about every computer manufacturer made up its own symbols for logic
gates.
DEC, for example, featured their symbols prominently in manuals aimed
at their customers, because of their emphasis on interfacing to their
machines. With most other manufacturers, this sort of thing was
confined to maintenance manuals and schematics.
