Hopefully a graybeard will see this question and immediately know the
answer: does anyone know what was the first reference of "chip" to
describe a microchip? The only thing I can think of is that the first
IC's physically resembled "chips"--i.e., in the traditional sense of
the word, as in a slice or a small piece--of their parent substrate,
but that's not very definitive.

A very early IBM design system was called CDS for "chip design system" ,
back to the late 60's for sure.
