Re: Network tape libraries

Hi All,

I turning to this group's expertise in order to find out if what I'm
looking for realy exists..

I need a better backup solution then a external SCSI DDS tape hooked
on a backupserver using amanda to backup remote servers in the LAN.

This realy worked till the backups stoped fitting in a single tape;
amanda supports multiples volumes but I don't find it practical to
manage multiple volumes manualy, and is prune to failures either of
setup or human.

What I'm looking for is basicaly a tape library device, and there are
many out there... but I wanted something with some kind of network
conection instead of a SCSI interface. More, I wanted that device to
be able do backups without the need for a backup server.

I've looked into solutions like Overland's ArcVault, HP StorageWorks,
IBM's etc.. all seem to be just a SCSI tape drive with a robot to
replace the tapes for you.. I needed something more "inteligent" some
kind of SAN or iSCSI network storage device that manages the tapes
automaticaly.

Something similar to mount a "volume" in the filesystem and just copy
or dump the data there, knowing that the backup device would manage
the tapes alone.

Is there something similar to this?

Thanks

How many servers are you talking about? We use Symantec/Veritas
Netbackup to back up about 300 servers, linux, Solaris, and Windows
over IP/ethernet on a dedicated network. Licensing may be a bit
costly right now in a smaller environment, but I understand the newest/
soon to be released Netbackup version is supposed to be based on TB
backed up, not server count, so pricing could get more attractive
soon.

We're currently negotiating with several VARs (and management) for an
upgraded backup solution with a Netbackup Master server with 5-10TB
of internal SATA disk that I can write backups to. Netbackup will use
the network to write the backups to disk. Then Netbackup can schedule
dumping the disk backups en masse to a LTO tape array every morning
after the backups are completed.

Using the disk pool as the intermediate step will be more dependable
than direct to tape. That should also keep the LTO's streaming at
highest efficiency, too. We'll probably opt for a small LTO library
with 2-4 drives and 150 cartridge slots. Sun/STK's version fits in a
19" rack, not sure yet about HP's.

We pretty much ruled out using a VTL, too, as we have SLA's that
require us to offsite too many tapes, and the product is just too
expensive right now, although Netbackup could manage it, too. Does
that help?
