Newbie: 1TB storage options

Hi,

I'm quite of a hardware noob, but guess what, I'll need to buy a server
for our small company. Purpose is mainly development/testing database
applications and we need about 300gb live storage plus room for some
backups. Since these are not business critical applications and the
machines are physically located elsewhere, I was thinking about RAID +
spare disk capacity with backups to revert from accidental deletes,
requiring around 1Tb actual storage.

Server will probably be a Sun X4100 (AMD opteron) with Linux on it. Sun
proposed a 4x300gb scsi array but I find the cost (around 10000$) to be
quite high.

What are the options for non-Sun hardware: can I expect a non-Sun scsi
array to work on this? I mean, is compatibility a hardware platform
issue or an OS issue? Any recommendations on brands (good quality for a
reasonable price)?

I also saw some cheap SAN's from Supermicro out there (I could
basically get my 1Tb for around half the price with this). Any
experience with these?

Thanks for feedback,

Bruno
