Excel auto format not always working

I have a spread sheet that's programmed to auto fill certain columns a
certain color when anything is entered, but I noticed that *sometimes*
it doens't work. I don't understand why, except that I've noticed that
at least some of the times it won't work have been times when I've
entered data and then tabbed up instead of accross to the next field.
But other times I do this and it does fill in the way it should. I
don't understand what the difference is and how to change it. Is this
just a bug?
