Good thing you put "free" in quotes. The only cost of doing or making
anything is energy.

Yes, you need energy to do or make things, but you can't measure costs
in energy units:

Why not? It's done all the time. Ask any process engineer.

This assumes that the energy is of a certain kind.
As I said before, 1 Joule of mechanical energy has not the same
economical value of 1 Joule of heat.
